Australian Shepherds are incredibly intelligent, energetic working dogs that thrive when given a job to do. Despite their name, they were actually developed in the American West as ranch dogs. Their stunning merle coats and striking blue or heterochromatic eyes make them one of the most beautiful breeds around. Aussies are not suited for casual owners. They need extensive daily exercise and mental challenges to stay happy and well-behaved. When their needs are met, they are loyal, affectionate, and endlessly entertaining companions.
